Our Story

The Illuminated Boat Parade is an annual, magical event for any boat, any size any age – powered or unpowered, which provides a fun, free evening of entertainment for the whole Henley community; for boat entrants to close the boating season and for local residents (young and old) and families to come together and enjoy their river and community.

One of our primary organisers, Chris Taylor, who is an entrepreneur and toy inventor (he is  one of the creators of Polly Pockets) founded the event in Cookham in 2015. As a boating enthusiast he “thought it would be a nice idea to get a few lights on some boats and go down to the local pub!  We had about 10 boats and everyone had a wonderful evening. It was such a fun evening it became an annual event. “

Following Covid, Chris and his partner Penny brought it to Henley in 2022 after moving to the town. It has grown incrementally every year and become incredibly popular with people on both sides of the river.

The Parade

The event is a parade of beautifully lit and themed craft – powered or unpowered (no paddle boards) which sail from Fawley Meadows up to Henley Bridge. The craft are all imaginatively and wonderfully decorated. We have had many themes over the last few years – James Bond, Mamma Mia, Only Fools and Boats, Unicorns, Popeye, Under the Sea, Pirates – we even had a 7’ penguin one year!

The building and houses from the Bridge to Fawley Court are also brilliantly and colourfully lit, and approximately 3000 spectators watch the parade from both sides of the river. It is a marvellous spectacle!

This year it’s back with even more gusto! Many boat owners were so impressed by the event last year said they were going to “Up their game,” for this year. We can’t wait!

A panel of judges will decide who they think deserves the beautiful trophies. We have several categories so start planning now.

The exclusive, historical Leander Club throws open its doors to the public for this one night of the year, so everyone can come in and see the prize-giving. There are also bars and food trucks available for refreshments, so it truly is a full evening of entertainment for the whole family.
